.uk General Rules
.co.uk Rules
.org.uk Rules
.ltd.uk and .plc.uk Rules
.net.uk Rules

.com, .net and .org Rules

  • The allowable character set includes the letters 'a' to 'z', the numbers '0' to '9' and hyphen ('-').

  • No domain name may start with a hyphen ('-').

  • No domain name may end with a hyphen ('-').

  • The minimum number of characters in a domain name is 2.

  • The maximum number of characters in a domain name is 63.

  • The entire .com, .net and .org name space is entirely public. This means that if the name space is available, you have the right to go ahead and register it. However .com is known for being the commercial name space, .net is known for the network name space and .org is known for the non-profit organisation name space.

  • There shall be at least two name servers for the domain. There is no restriction on the physical location or IP address of these name servers.

(BeepDomains automatically provides name servers for your domains unless you should wish to host your own domains with your own name servers)

.uk General Rules

  • The allowable character set includes the letters 'a' to 'z', the numbers '0' to '9' and hyphen ('-').

  • No domain name may start with a hyphen ('-').

  • The maximum number of characters in a domain name is 63.

  • All one character domain names (ie [a-z0-9].xxx.uk) are reserved for possible future sub-domain usage.

  • Two letter names are not allowed, reserved for ISO country codes.

  • Two character names are allowed (i.e. a letter and a number is allowed).

  • All second level names of .uk are banned from being used as third level names. e.g. org.co.uk would be banned as it is a second level name.

  • All top level domains are banned from being used as third level names. e.g. net.org.uk and org.co.uk are not allowed.

  • There shall be at least two name servers for the domain. There is no restriction on the physical location or IP address of these name servers.

(BeepDomains automatically provides name servers for your domains unless you should wish to host your own domains with your own name servers)

.ltd.uk and .plc.uk Rules

The .ltd.uk and .plc.uk Second Level Domains are intended to permit a unique mapping between company names registered under the Companies Act 1985 [and (in Northern Ireland) under the Companies (Northern Ireland) order 1986] with Companies House and a DNS name.

Unlimited companies registered under the Companies Act 1985, unincorporated bodies, partnerships and bodies incorporated under other legislation are not eligible for an entry in the .ltd.uk or .plc.uk Second Level Domains.

The only characters from a registered company name allowed in a DNS name are the letters A to Z, a to z, the numbers 0 to 9 and hyphen. These are known as the "allowable" set.

Certain words must be removed from the registered company name before the DNS name is generated, these are known as the "reserved" words. They are "limited", "public limited company" and the Welsh Language versions along with the abbreviations of these words, e.g. ltd, plc, ccc. There are believed to be other "reserved" words such as "International".

The rules are:

  • One name per company name registered at Companies House
  • The name shall correspond exactly to the registered name save for characters not in the "allowable" set and the "reserved" words. Where the definite article appears as the first word of the name it may be omitted
  • White space between words shall either be ignored or replaced by a single hyphen "-".
  • All other characters shall be removed.
  • Company names written in a non English character set are not allowed at present.

The rules are intended to represent the way that Companies House (or The Companies Registry in Northern Ireland) interpret names in order to produce a unique match.

The requester of the name may be required by Nominet UK to provide a copy of the certificate of incorporation of the applicant and/or a letter on company letterhead, signed by a director or the company secretary of the applicant. The application must state the full name of the company as registered at Companies House or The Northern Ireland Companies Registry along with the company registration number.

.net.uk Rules

The .net.uk is limited to the registration of Third Level Domains for Internet Service Providers.

Decisions on name requests in the .net.uk Second Level Domain are made by Nominet UK.

Specifically, Nominet UK must be satisfied that the applicant for a Third Level Domain Name within the .net.uk Second Level Domain meets each of the following criteria:

  • The applicant is an Internet Service Provider

  • The applicant is either:

    • a company listed on the Register of Companies at Companies House under the Companies Act 1985 in the Great Britain or on the Register of Companies at the Northern Ireland Companies Registry under the Companies (Northern Ireland) Order 1986.

      or

    • a United Kingdom government department, local government body, or associated government funded organisation

      or

    • a recognised academic institution geographically located in the United Kingdom

      or

    • a Charity on the Register of Charities at the Charity Commission in the United Kingdom.

  • The applicant either:

    • be listed as a local IP address registry with a regional IP address registry.

      or

    • have an Autonomous System containing hosts in the United Kingdom that is listed with a regional IP address registry and that is continuously reachable from major Internet exchange points.

  • The requested domain name is the same as or a reasonable variant of the applicant's name. The applicant will use the domain in conformance with the RFC 1591 guidelines for NET domains.

    NET
This domain is intended to hold only the computers of network providers, that is the NIC and NOC computers, the administrative computers, and the network node computers. The customers of the network provider would have domain names of their own (not in the NET TLD).

  • The registrant will not use the domain for any service they provide on behalf of any other entity, eg the domain name may not appear in customer e-mail addresses or URLs.
